Lo5: My Final Photos

Flyfs

(Flyfs is a made up word created by my family and is used as a joking insult)

Father

This is my father. He is funny, kind and a major influence on my life and how I live. His favourite past time is to ride his bike through the city streets as it provides him with a sense of excitement and high energy. I chose to represent him with this photo as it he is denoted next to his bike in his biker gear which connotes that it is important to him. I also chose this photo because of his stern yet comical facial expression which accurately connotes his personality. The use of limited colour featured in the photo is also used to further connote the link between my father and his bike.
I will like to display this image on a matt solid wrap canvas at the size 16x12 which could cost £40.

Sister

This is my sister. My sister may be fairly timid but she is very caring, considerate and has an elegant personality. She likes to spend her days drawing, painting and creating wonderful pieces of art and is always working hard to improve her craft. I chose this photo to represent her as I think it connotes her character and attributes the best. The denoted movement connotes her elegance and her hard working attitude. The lighting connotes a warm atmosphere which also connotes her caring attitude and finally  the art featured denotes her incredible skill at her craft.

Brother

This is my brother. He is an excitable and energetic child, but when he focuses on what he loves best he is filled with curiosity and intrigue. My brother loves to build things out of anything he can find in the house and can be found on the floor of his room surrounded with bits and bobs he is using to create his next invention. I chose this photo to represent my brother as it denotes him reaching into a bag as if to take something out of it, making the audience feel like they are the object he is tinkering with. I chose this angle so that my brothers face was easily visible as I wanted to denote his concentrating facial expressions.

Mother

This is my mother. My mother is a very hard worker in the family. She cooks for us all, she cleans up after our mess and even works as a nurse to help out others who are in need. My mother accomplishes all these things with a smile on her face as she strives to keep us all in check. I chose this photo to represent her as the props and uniform denoted in the image connotes some of the various jobs that she undertakes in family life and her happy facial expression connotes her cheerful personality.

Me

This is a representation of me. I usually spend a majority of my free time in my room playing video games with my friends or practicing my banjo. This photo contains items that reflect my interests or mean something personal to me. The bear in the photo is something I have had for years and I used to take it everywhere I go. The cardboard hat is an item I made last minute before a fancy dress party and is still used for various occasions today. The pumpkin represents the nickname given to me by my father which is "Lant" derived from Jack O'Lantern and also represents my affinity with spooky related themes.

Lo4: Editing my photos

Here I am editing two photos out of my chosen 5. These are the only photos I wished to edit as I think my other photos did not need any unnecessary editing.

For my first photo I used the magic wand and selection tool to select the areas which surround the blue of the bike and the green of my father jacket. I then desaturated the selected areas to make them greyscale so only the blue and green are visible. After, I then altered the brightness of the greyscale area so that my father's face was more visible.

With the second photo I duplicated the layer and set the top layer to "overlay". I then used a gaussian blur to give the photo a slight glow. Finally I then altered the contrast of the photo of the top layer so that my mother's face was more visible.

I edited my father in order to emphasise the link between himself and his bike and to express his bold personality.

For my mother I edited the photo to make it feel softer to connote my mothers caring personality.

Here I am editing my photo of my personal belongings. I started with adding a soft glow to the image by using the same technique I used for the photo of my mother and then altered various settings relating to brightness, contrast and colour to achieve a warming effect.

I edited this photo as I wanted to connote a warm friendly atmosphere and make the image feel more homely.

Lo3: Adobe Bridge Task

Here is a screen grab of Adobe Bridge. I used this software to help me organise my photos and be able to pick out the photos I like via the star rating system. The piece of software also helped me see what camera settings I had used for each photo after I had taken them.

This is a slow shutter speed shot of my sister's hand drawing. I took this photo to denote my sister's passion for drawing.

I used a slow shutter speed as a method of denoting the passage of time which connotes the time my sister puts into her work. I also used a slow shutter speed as away of connoting the elegance and delicacy of my sisters movement. To achieve this effect I set my shutter speed to 5 seconds and used a tripod to keep the camera stable.

In order to prevent the photo from becoming over exposed, I set my aperture to f/10 and ISO to 125.

The shot type of the photo is a close up and is used to denote my sisters favourite past time with greater emphasis.

The photo was taken inside of her room with my sister drawing on her desk. I chose this location as it is where she spends most of her free time and is her favourite place for drawing.

The photo has her drawing centred in the middle of the photo and her hand moves between the left and right line of third.

I think this photo does not require any form of editing as I believe it would detract form the image and make it look cluttered and messy.

In this photo the drawing is positioned along the left line of third and her arm takes up the right third of the image. I did this to try and include both the drawing and more of my sister in the photo.

The ISO in this photo is set to 320. This was to try and get a brighter image.

I think this photo does not require any form of editing as I believe it would detract form the image and make it look cluttered and messy.

This is a photo denoting my younger brother looking into a bag with his arms in the bag as if he is taking something out. This photo was taken to connote how my brother likes to mess around or work on practical objects which links to my theme of identity.

I have used a low angle with my brother looming over the top to connote him having power over his "creation" and to also denote the effect that we are watching him through the perspective of the thing he is creating.

The subject's face is positioned in the centre of the shot and he is looking directly into the camera. I did this to connote my brother's focus and concentration and so that he could be framed by the edges of the paper bag.

I used depth of field in this photo so I could blur out the background of the photo and keep my brother in focus. I did this so I could apply emphasis onto my brothers face. I achieved this effect by setting my aperture to f/3.5 so that I could get a shallow depth of field.

The ISO is set to 1600 as the location was very dark and I needed a high ISO in order for the camera to receive as much light as possible.

I do not think that this photo needs to be edited as I think it fine the way it is and think editing would detract form the original photo.

This is a photo of my mother positioned similarly to the statue of liberty whilst decorated with various items of clothing and props which denote the many roles my mother has in our family.

For this photo I have taken a mid shot of my mother. I used this shot type to denote all the clothes and props she is wearing and so that we can easily see the pose she is standing in.
I had my mother standing in a statue of liberty style pose as away of connoting her power to keep balance in the family through all the hard work she puts in.

For this shot I used a shutter speed of 1/320, an ISO set to 400 and the aperture is set to 5.6. I used these settings as the natural lighting in the photo was very bright and I needed to make sure my pictures were not over exposed.

In this photo, I have my mother positioned in the centre of the image as she is the primary focus of the photo. My mother is also positioned between the left and right lines of third which helps apply a greater emphasis to her.

For this photo I am going to apply a soft glow to the image as a way of connoting my mothers personality and brighten up her face as it is a bit dark in the photo and it would help denote her cheerful personality.

This is a photo of my mother positioned similarly to the statue of liberty whilst decorated with various items of clothing and props which denote the many roles my mother has in our family.

In this photo I have positioned my mother in front of the sun an taken a low angle shot. I took this photo to connote the power to keep balance in the family through all the hard work she puts in.

As I was facing the sun I set my shutter speed to 1/400, aperture to f/20 and set the ISO to 200 so that the picture did not become over exposed.

In this photo, I have my mother positioned in the centre of the image as she is the primary focus of the photo. My mother is also positioned between the left and right lines of third which helps apply a greater emphasis to her.

For this photo I do not think it needs to be edited as I feel it would detract form the overall image.

In this photo I have my father positioned next to his bike in his garage. I took this photo to denote my father as a motorcyclist which is a hobby he enjoys greatly. In this photo I used a slight low angle to connote the power of the bike and my farther.

The location of the photo was fairly dark so I had to use an ISO of 1600, an aperture of f/4.5 and a shutter speed of 1/30 so I could gain as much light as possible.

In this photo my farther is looking off to the side with a stern expression of his face.  This is to connote his role as a farther and always watching out.

When editing this photo I wish to make the overall image greyscale but leave the blue of the bike and the green of my farther's jacket untouched as they are bold colours which describes the bold personality of my farther.

In this photo my farther is positioned along the left line of third. This is to apply a greater emphasis on to him as he is the main focus of the photo.

On the ceiling of the photo I have ladders which act as leading lines which direct the audience's eyes toward my father which helps denote his importance in the photograph.

In the photo I have used objects that I own in order to represent myself.  The objects featured in this photo are used to connote my hobbies, interests and history.

The shot type is a close up. I used this shot type so that I could denote the importance of the objects and make them the main focus of the photo.

I used depth of field in this photo to help apply emphasis to the objects that matter to me most. To achieve this I used a shallow depth of field with an f-stop of f/4.

I also used an average shutter speed to capture the image and an ISO of 400 as my light source was bright enough for the camera.

I think I will edit this photo by adding a soft glow and altering the colours to connote a warm atmosphere.

In this photo I have the bear, cardboard hat and pumpkin take up 2 thirds of the photo and leaving the left third open for the controller and banjo. I did this to apply emphasis onto the objects that matter to me most whilst still displaying what I enjoy as hobbies.

In the photo I have used objects that I own in order to represent myself.  The objects featured in this photo are used to connote my hobbies, interests and history.

This shot type is a high angle. I used this shot type so I could denote multiple objects at once. To get this shot type I had to position the camera over the objects with my hands and to prevent the images appearing shaky I set the shutter speed to 1/320 so the picture would be taken quickly. But to let light in and to prevent the photo being under exposed I set the ISO to 3200 and the aperture to f/8.

The objects only fit in the space between the right and left line of third. I did this in order to keep the objects centralised.

In photoshop, I think I will alter the brightness and contrast to make the photo brighter.

Photo Shoot 2

Here are my photos from my second photo shoot.

I'm not very happy with the results as the lighting was not great for the outside shots and the locations I took these photos in are sub-par at best.

I also had to use a contingency for my photo of my father as roadworks had just started on the road I had planned to use.

I need to go out and recapture these photos during the holidays in better locations with better lighting.

Here was my second attempt at the photo of my sister. But the shoot was cut short as I my battery had run out of power and my spare also had no power.
