Lo2 Mood board of inspiration

Lo2 Copyright, Release and Consent forms and Legal and Ethical

Copyright is the ownership of a piece of media which is established in order to prevent others from replicating that piece of media as their own.

Copyright is the protection of intellectual property and gaining permission to use any content that is not yours.

It is important when taking photographs as we do not wish to infringe on other people's copyright.

Release and consent form

A release and consent form is a way for models or owners of a intellectual property to give permission for a photographer to use themselves or their IP in the photographers photos and have that photo 'released' somewhere else.

R and C forms are also used to gain permission to take photos of private property but is not needed for public places.

But when taking photos in public places:
  • You must not use telephoto in public places as it can take photos of people without the knowing.
  • Do not take photos of brands or businesses as it is copyright and the companies do not want you to misrepresent the company.

Legal and Ethical

We need to be conscious of representation when taking pictures so that:
  • We don't get sued for our actions
  • We don't act or appear suspicious in public places
  • We follow and respect the law set by the government
  • We don't want to misrepresent companies, people, religion, ethnicities, disabilities and culture.

Lo1 Photographers Analysis

Bob Martin

Photographic Category:
Bob Martin is a sports photographer. He specialises in capturing exciting moments during sporting events into crisp and clear images.

Purpose:
This photograph could be used for sports magazines or articles about sport as it connotes the competitive nature of sport and also promotes sporting events.

Image Analysis:
In this photo we see Usain Bolt in the foreground making the final 'push' over the finish line. Usain Bolt is connoted as the main focus of this photo as he is in focus and is positioned roughly on the left line of third which helps draw attention toward Usain. This picture was also taken at a very quick shutter speed (1/250th) and wide aperture (f4) which results in the shallow depth of field and the ability to freeze movement in a crisp and clear image.
The lighting is artificial and high key which helps connote the audience that they are running in a stadium.

The shot type is a long shot as it displays the subject's entire body and denotes the endurance and power in his muscles.

In the mid ground we see two runners who are slightly out of focus due to the depth of field. This is used to help further denote Usain as the main focus of the piece and also is used to connote Usain's dominance over his competitors with his athletic abilities.

Denoted in the background is the audience at the event. The audience is incredibly out of focus which connotes that they are not important in the photograph and tells the viewer that all attention should only be applied to Usain.

A low ISO (200-400) was mstly likely used as the stadium is very brightly lit with high key lighting and the photo has no sign of grain.

The subject in this image is framed by the crowd and the running track which surrounds Usain like a border.

Meaning:
The meaning of this photograph is to demonstrate the strength and endurance humans possess through the subject's determined facial expressions and tension in his muscles.

Rinko Kawauchi

Photographic Category:
Rinko Kawauchi is a macro fine art photographer. I enjoy her work because she likes to take photos that cause people to appreciate the unappreciated and even manages to evoke certain emotions from the audience.

Purpose:
This photo was taken for a collection of photographs Kawauchi was creating named Utatane which could be found in art galleries and is published as a book. It is used to entertain an audience.

Image Analysis:
Denoted in this photo is a close up of a dead wasp lying on top of a windowsill.
The wasp is the main focus of the piece as it stands out against the bland background with its yellow and black colours.
It is positioned on the left line of third and thanks to the wide aperture (f2.8) it is the only object in the picture that is in focus.
Also because of the wide aperture and high key lighting the shutter speed will have been set to about 1/125th of a second so the picture was not over exposed.
All these techniques focuses the audiences attention onto the dead wasp so that the audience pays more attention to something that they normally would not care about in their day to day life.

The wasp also hold the connotations of death, sadness and loneliness which will evoke sad emotions in the audience and cause them to pity the wasp.

The photograph was taken at a canted angle to make the image feel strange and abnormal which helps capture the audiences attention.

A low ISO (100-200) would have been used in this photo as the location is brightly lit and a high ISO is unnecessary .

The subject in this photo is framed through the gap in the window ledge below the wasp and the bottom of the window frame. These 'frames' act as leading lines that draw the audience's attention toward the subject.

Meaning:
The meaning of this photo is to try and make people feel more considerate about the things that are around them and appreciate those things while they have the chance.

Charlie Waite

Photographic Category:
Charlie Waite is a landscape photographer who specialises in capturing the serene and peaceful beauty of nature.

Purpose:
Waite's photos could be used as promotional material for various locations as adverts.

Image Analysis:
In this photo we can see that Charlie has used a narrow aperture (f22) and a high shutter speed (1/125th) thanks to how much clear detail we can see in the photo because of the deep depth of field.
The image is cropped to a square in order the cut out any unnecessary excess and leaving only the important features of the photograph.
The fore-ground of the photo finishes around the midway point of the photo which, when combined with the square aspect ratio, creates a pleasurable effect for the brain and acts as a leading line to ward the main focus of the photo.

In the mid-ground we see mountains, the tip of the mountains rest roughly on the upper line of third which leaves an entire third of "white space" in the background. This denotes the size of nature and its vastness.

The building situated in the centre of the photo is denoted as the main focus of the piece as it strikes out against the rest of the landscape because it is the only man made object featured in the photo. Another reason why it is connoted as the main focus of the photo is through how the path acts as a leading line drawing the eyes directly toward the building.
I think an ISO around 400-800 was used in this photo in order to illuminate the location with much more effect than when solely using the natural lighting.
The photograph is a establishing shot denoting the location of Montagne Sainte-Victoire, France and its beauty.
The house in the photo is being framed by the land and mountains which act as a border for the house.

Meaning:
The meaning of this photo is to capture the beauty of nature and to demonstrate its size and scale compared to what man has achieved.

Paul White

Photographic Category:
Paul White is a architectural photographer.

Purpose:
Paul White's photos are taken to express the beauty of architecture and can be used as promotional material for these buildings. This photo could most likely be seen in advertisements to promote the building in real estate shops or magazines.

Image Analysis:
Denoted in this photo is a building for the Appleton Academy. The photographer has taken this photo at a low angle which connotes the building's height and size.
The photographer has also used the wood panelling to act as leading lines which draws the eyes of the audience up the building causing the building to be the main focus of the audiences attention.
This photo was taken using a narrow aperture (f 22) and fast shutter speed (1/125) as the entire photo is in focus and despite the high key lighting from the clear skies, the photo is not over exposed.
Another way the photographer creates focus onto the building is through his use of 'white space' or the sky which not only frames the subject but creates an extreme contrast via juxtaposition which results in greater emphasis being applied to the building.

The photo is a mid shot as it denotes the detail on the building with out getting incredibly close to the subject.

The ISO would be low (100-200) so that the photo does not become over exposed.

Meaning:
The meaning of this photo is to denote the beauty and dominance of the building.

Lo1 David Chang – Doc/fest photographer presentation

Today I will be having a presentation by David Chan.
In his talk, he spoke about:

  •  How aperture and shutter speed affects photographs - (the wider the aperture and longer the shutter speed, the more light is let in)
  • The different genres of photography
  • What it is like to work in these genres of photography
  • What a photographer has to think about when taking photos for these genres
  • How to plan a photo
